Eighth-grader urges expanded video production classes to Waukee school board

Theo Lam, an eighth-grade student, asked the Waukee Community School District Board of Directors to expand access to video production classes after describing hands-on learning he received in an 8th-grade course taught by Tyler Ling.
Lam told the board the class offered “invaluable hands-on experience in media creation” and exposed students to tools and techniques that prepare them for work in digital communications, social media and related industries. “This course provided me with invaluable hands on experience and media creation and introduced me to vast opportunities,” Lam said.
Lam said classmates who did not take the elective were nonetheless inspired by student work and that adding more classes or workshops would let more students explore storytelling, use professional tools and gain workforce-ready skills. He suggested the district consider additional classes, workshops or expanded enrollment so “every student in the district who had an interest in video production could have the opportunity to try it.”
Lam praised teacher Tyler Ling for leadership and instructional support. The board closed the public comment period after Lam’s remarks and moved to the evening’s strategic plan update.
Board members did not take immediate action on Lam’s suggestion during public comment; the remarks were entered into the record for consideration by staff and the board.
