Local VFW and chamber announce veteran benefits, celebrate student scholarship winner

At the start of the meeting, Dave McKinley, speaking on behalf of the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce and VFW Post 12186, announced two community items: upcoming Oktoberfest events that will be free to veterans and news that a local student won a statewide VFW competition and earned a scholarship and an invitation to Washington, D.C.
McKinley said the Oktoberfest events—scheduled across a weekend near City Hall—“will be free to veterans.” He also described Jackson Settle, a high-school student from Oldsmar, as the post’s winner in the VFW “Voice of Democracy” audio-essay competition. McKinley said Settle was selected from more than 700 competitors across Florida and will travel to Washington for a tour and further competition. “That young man, Jackson Settle, from the city of Oldsmar, represented himself and all of us in this community extremely well,” McKinley said.
McKinley said he would share the student’s recorded speech and encouraged continued collaboration between veterans’ groups and youth programs. No formal board action or funding was reported related to the announcements.
