The Burke County Board of Education on Jan. 21 approved two modifications to previously authorized student field trips: a chorus trip that was postponed last year and a travel/art club trip that was narrowed to a New York itinerary.
Why it matters: Both travel requests were deviations from the list of field trips the board approved in August. School staff and the superintendent’s office reviewed the changes and recommended board approval.
What the board approved: Rebecca Cross, the Burke County High School chorus teacher, requested a modification after a hurricane caused a cancellation. The district recommended approval of the replacement activity (workshops and lessons spelled out in the request) and the board voted unanimously to approve the change. The art teacher, Dr. Stan Dodson, requested that the travel itinerary be adjusted so the planned trip focuses on New York (removing Washington, D.C., from the itinerary); the board also approved that change unanimously.
Procedure and vote: Both motions were moved and seconded on the record and each passed by unanimous voice vote.
