Young County Commissioners Court on Jan. 27 adopted a resolution opposing proposed state legislation to eliminate the countywide polling place program and restrict voters to precinct polling locations.
A county election official supplied a draft resolution to the court; the resolution says Young County has used countywide polling since 2016, that countywide polling increases turnout and reduces provisional ballots, and that the program relies on e‑pollbooks authorized under Texas Election Code §31.014. The resolution states the court’s position that eliminating countywide polling, e‑pollbooks or ballot‑marking devices would be a disservice to Young County voters and could disenfranchise many voters in rural counties.
Commissioner Wylie moved the resolution and a second was made; the court approved the resolution 5‑0. Commissioners said the countywide program helps voters who work outside their home precincts and that adding precinct‑only polling locations could raise costs for a rural county that currently provides fewer polling locations than precincts. The court asked staff to circulate the resolution to regional election partners.
