The House Tourism, Recreation and Economic Development Committee opened an organizational meeting where members confirmed committee procedure, discussed an invitation to tour Harrisburg's Whitaker Center and raised early plans for the nation's 250th anniversary.
"So, pursuant to House Rule 44, the committee shall operate pursuant to the standard committee operating rules and those can be found in rules, 1c, through 4c," Chair Daley said, asking members to note the governing rules that will guide the committee's work this session.
The committee discussed a proposed tour and dinner at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. Chair Daley said the center had invited the committee to visit and that staff member Josh would supply the date, adding, "we're thinking it would be the next week when we're here." The date for the tour was not specified during the meeting; staff were directed to follow up by email with timing and details.
Rep. Lee James said the committee could use the coming 250th anniversary as an opportunity to showcase urban and rural parts of Pennsylvania. "It's an opportunity, I believe, to showcase both the, the City of Harrisburg and other major urban centers, but also the rural portions of Pennsylvania," Rep. James said, and reported receiving early inquiries from the Clarion area about potential local programming.
Chair Daley also said the committee plans to invite the secretaries of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to appear before the committee. He asked members who sit on the Appropriations Committee to funnel any questions through the committee chairs so they can be addressed when the agency secretaries attend.
With that business complete, the chair declared the meeting adjourned. No formal votes were taken during the session.
The items discussed are organizational and planning in nature; the Whitaker Center tour date and any substantive 250th-anniversary programs remain to be scheduled and developed.
