Southside ISD trustees approve annual board self-evaluation, pledge more community engagement

Jessie Hernandez, board president of Southside Independent School District, announced that the Board unanimously approved its annual self-evaluation at the regular Jan. 15 meeting.
The evaluation scored the board’s governance across multiple frameworks and produced an aggregate score of 74, up from 53 in the prior review period. Board members said they will prioritize community engagement activities — including scheduling a Lone Star Governance community meeting — to move several evaluation categories to a higher performance level.
Diane Drummond of Region 20 attended the meeting and led the trustees through the review process. The board’s discussion identified specific follow-ups: scheduling the Lone Star Governance session, resharing the district mission and goals with the community, and developing theories of action to guide strategic work.
Trustees also agreed to hold quarterly board self-evaluations going forward and requested staff produce a report showing the average cost of staff time spent on governance activities. The Board said it will use that report to ensure the trustees evaluate without interfering in operational matters.
Ms. Morales Garcia moved to approve the annual self-evaluation; Ms. Salazar seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The board held a closed session after the vote to discuss board member duties and a health center service agreement; the board returned from closed session at 6:55 p.m. and announced it would take no action on the closed-session items.
Trustees closed the meeting without additional votes.
