Black Student Unions present MLK Day activities and county partnerships as program expands

Patrice Griffith, a BSU co-advisor, and students from River City High School and Bridgeway Island Elementary spoke at the Jan. 23 Washington Unified board meeting about Black Student Union activities tied to Martin Luther King Jr. Day and plans for Black History Month programming across the district.
Griffith described partnerships with the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) and countywide events planned for Feb. 3 as part of a quilt project and a county tour. "We must continue to march ahead," Griffith told the board, invoking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for continuing progress. She said 15 quilts created by a local artist will be displayed in district libraries later this month and that BSU students from multiple campuses will help develop a passport-style tour for the quilts.
Student speakers detailed classroom and extracurricular responsibilities and discussed leadership roles. River City students described how BSU work connects to campus leadership and academic activities; Bridgeway Island students described a Frederick Douglass Day project collecting pictures and quotes.
Griffith also noted the district's collaboration with Sacramento State on guaranteed admission for Washington Unified seniors (presentation credited to district staff coordination); she thanked district staff and county partners for support and said she had accepted a co-chair role for an upcoming county leadership conference.
The board praised student presenters and advisors and invited the group for a photo following the presentation. No formal board action was taken on the presentation.
