Parks & Recreation staff reported that a $1,500 grant from the San Diego Senior Community Foundation will fund seven virtual‑reality sessions as part of the commission's "mingle" series; the program will offer virtual trips (past and upcoming destinations mentioned included Cuba and Paris) and a complimentary VR slot for the first 20 Encinitas residents who sign up in person. Parks & Recreation staff also said the January "mingle and create" event drew 16 registrants and that future mingle sessions will include salsa lessons.
Senior center operations figures presented to the commission: 475 senior meals were provided in November and 409 in December; 206 one‑way rides were provided in November and 178 in December; 954 registered program participants in November and 633 in December. Staff encouraged commissioners to promote upcoming events including Techie Tutors on Feb. 1, the Chamber resource fair on Feb. 8, Arbor Day on April 5, and the spring egg hunt on April 19.
Commissioners discussed outreach strategies, disaster preparedness distribution to high‑risk neighborhoods, and potential briefings on the city homeless plan as it relates to seniors. Several commissioners urged stronger engagement with community partners — the library, youth commission and service clubs — and recommended recruitment of speakers for the spring calendar, including a proposed presentation on driver and bicycle safety.
