Commission approves consent calendar; staff previews mural education, grant and restoration programs

The Santa Ana Arts and Culture Commission unanimously approved the consent calendar at its Jan. 16 meeting. Commissioner Margo Biscara moved to consider consent items numbered 12 and Commissioner Russell seconded; the motion passed by unanimous consent.
In staff updates, the commission heard that the Bridging the Gap mural education program will work with San Ana Unified School District schools and will be led by muralist Alex Sanchez (also known as Zunbero). Staff said the program will take 15 students from each of two schools — identified in staff materials as Lauren Gresset Academy and Cesar Chavez High School — on site visits, workshops and a final mural workshop. The first field trip is scheduled for Jan. 22.
Staff said it completed orientation meetings with 23 recipients of the Investing in the Artist grants to go over budgets, reporting, insurance and invoicing requirements, and that recipients will present to the commission in coming months. Staff also announced a new Restore Art pilot focused on conservation of murals at least 15 years old; staff materials stated the program will distribute awards in amounts described as between $5,000 and $25,000 depending on condition and project needs, with the call for proposals due Feb. 13.
Commissioners provided contextual remarks about the Plaza Calle Cuatro site and local artist coalitions that previously worked to organize community input for murals; one commissioner urged staff and commissioners to review that history before finalizing selection and design for the sister‑city mural. Several commissioners also asked staff to share drafts of grant agreements and restoration criteria with the commission prior to final execution.
No further formal votes were taken during the staff update portion. Staff will return with panel selections, renderings and additional program materials at future meetings.
