The Redondo Beach Cultural Arts Commission voted to create an ad hoc committee to develop recommendations for a permanent LGBTQ public art installation and appointed three commissioners to serve.
Chairperson Christian Kelly nominated herself; Commissioner O'Brien Herrera and Commissioner Gold also volunteered and were appointed to the three‑member committee. A motion to appoint those members passed by voice vote. Commissioners and members of the public urged the commission to place the work in a visible location rather than at civic center, and to proceed quickly.
Commissioners recalled past site visits and conversations with LGBTQ organizations and noted several possible placement options the group had previously considered, including the boardwalk and locations on Artesia Boulevard. Joan Irvine, a resident who spoke during public comment, praised the commission’s move and stressed that a permanent installation would “represent diversity and…welcome all.”
The ad hoc committee is charged with returning to the full commission with site and medium recommendations; commissioners discussed sculpture, mural and mixed‑media possibilities. Commissioners noted that the committee’s work will culminate in a recommendation to the full commission and then to City Council for any final approvals and funds.
