The Redondo Beach Police Department told the Public Safety Commission on Jan. 23 that detectives are actively investigating a December 22 shooting on Vanderbilt Lane in which the victim sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries.
Police announced that detectives executed two search warrants in the city in connection with the shooting and recovered evidence; officials said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact the department's detective bureau.
Separately, officers monitored an unpermitted car‑show gathering on Dec. 27 at a Hawthorne Boulevard parking lot. The department said it observed vehicles performing speed exhibitions and burnouts; officers from Redondo Beach and Torrance, with assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's air unit, made traffic stops that produced citations and two vehicle impounds. No arrests were reported; officers ordered attendees to disperse at about 11 p.m., and graffiti found after attendees left is under investigation.
On traffic enforcement more broadly, Redondo Beach supervisors told the commission patrol officers issued citations targeting speed and stop‑sign violations through directed patrols in problem corridors. A department supervisor reported that officers issued 263 citations for speed and stop violations in a focused area over the last year and said the department will continue targeted enforcement where resources allow. Commission staff also relayed citywide citation figures reported during the meeting: 29,143 citations in 2023 and 4,781 in 2024; the meeting record shows those counts as submitted by staff for commission discussion.
Community policing and outreach items reported to the commission included recent station tours, a blood drive that nearly met a community goal, upcoming Citizen Police Academy classes, and plans for a "Cops with Clinicians" outreach event and a public‑safety open house. The department said volunteers in policing logged 2,741 hours in December and 37,196 hours for the year.
Commissioners praised patrol and partner agency coordination for the car‑show enforcement and asked for continued distribution of enforcement data to support neighborhood planning and engineering decisions.
