Upper Dublin construction update: Fort Washington canopy work closed out; Thomas Fitzwater phase 2 and varsity softball remain active

Megan Sarsonello of ICS updated the Finance Committee on multiple district construction projects on Jan. 22.
At Fort Washington Elementary School, Sarsonello said work on the bus canopy and required sidewalk and ramp changes to meet ADA standards was completed in October. The district received the final certificate of occupancy in December, and the insurance company agreed to cover the costs.
At Thomas Fitzwater Elementary in Maple Glen, Sarsonello said phase 1 — largely the administrative area, gym, library, cafeteria, the front of the building and about six classrooms in the back wing — was completed last summer. Phase 2 will focus on the remainder of the back of the school. Permit applications are being submitted, the township asked for an updated certificate of insurance, and the plan is to remove ceilings starting over spring break to allow above-ceiling work and some early mechanical piping rough-in.
At Upper Dublin High School, work on the JV softball field is complete (backstop netting, padding and player fencing). The varsity field requires fabrication and installation of walk-way railings behind the backstop, sod installation, infield mix work and bullpens/pitcher mounds/home plate work; the scoreboard commissioning and owner training are pending. Sarsonello said the sod supplier will not cut sod until soil thaws and temperatures are consistently in the mid-40s; the team is targeting sod installation to allow about two weeks of establishment before the first scheduled game on March 10. Contingencies include using blankets to protect sod, stapling sod, using larger rolls to reduce seams, and possibly using infield mix rather than sod in narrow strips near the dugouts to reduce risk.
Committee members discussed contingency plans if warmer weather does not arrive in time, including swapping early games to alternate fields and coordinating with the athletic department on scheduling. Sarsonello said the district had discussed those possibilities with the athletic director and softball coach and that early-season scheduling changes are not uncommon.
