Council praises Development Services for lean-process changes that staff say saved about $900,000

"I just want to commend Brian and his folks for taking that leap of faith initially and being the first group to move forward," Goodwin said, describing a consultant report and follow-up workshop. "Every detail is scrutinized, and only those important things get acted upon, and those that act as distractors are eliminated as waste."
Goodwin said the changes have produced both improved internal communication and time savings. He said the effort has led to the hiring of full-time staff dedicated to the work and estimated the process improvements produced about $900,000 in staff-time savings, a figure he prefaced by saying, "I think I got that number right."
The council discussion referenced a prior workshop in which a consultant evaluated development services and recommended process changes to reduce waste and speed decision-making. Goodwin said the effort is not finished but represents a continuous-improvement approach that the city is expanding into other departments. He linked the improvements to the city—s ability to process housing and development projects more quickly.
