Arizona Senate reads dozens of bills into record, refers them to committees; president names temporary committee replacements

The Arizona Senate on Wednesday recorded attendance, dispensed with and approved the reading of the previous journal, read a large group of bills into the record and referred each to a standing committee, and President Reiser named temporary replacements on several committees for Jan. 22, 2025.

The bill introductions covered a wide range of subject areas — public safety, elections, taxation, health care, education and natural resources — and were referred to the committees named by the reading clerk as each bill was read. The Senate also recorded 21 members present and nine excused at the roll call before proceeding to business.

Senate President Reiser announced temporary committee appointments for Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, naming Senator Schamp, Senator Alston, Senator Bravo, Senator Kavanaugh and Senator Leach to replace members listed on that day’s committee rosters. The appointments were read into the record as temporary replacements for specified committee meetings on Jan. 22, 2025.

The clerk read aloud the bills and committee referrals. Examples taken directly from the record include:

Committee meeting times were announced on the floor, including the Education Committee meeting at 2 p.m. in Senate Hearing Room 1 and the Judiciary and Elections Committee meeting at 10:15 a.m. in Senate Hearing Room 2.

On routine business earlier in the session, the Senate recorded attendance (21 present, nine excused) and, without objection, dispensed with and approved the reading of the journal for the prior session as recorded by the secretary.

No floor debate of the specific bill texts or votes on the merits of those measures occurred on the floor during the readings; each bill was introduced and referred to the committee listed at the time it was read.

The Senate proceeded to report the referrals to the journal and adjourn for the day’s remaining business, with committee meetings and hearings scheduled per the calendar.
