The Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted House Resolution 8, declaring Jan. 13, 2025, to be Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated Day in Michigan.
The resolution, introduced by Representative Brenda Carter, commemorates the sorority’s 112th anniversary and cites its programs in education, civic engagement and public service. Representative Carter said the organization’s history and initiatives warrant formal recognition by the state legislature.
“Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated proudly celebrates a 112 years of service and excellence,” Representative Brenda Carter said during floor remarks. Carter noted the sorority’s founding at Howard University in 1913 and its longtime emphasis on scholarship, social action and community programs, naming initiatives such as Delta GEMS and the sorority’s five-point programmatic thrust.
Carter listed several public figures as examples of the sorority’s influence and referenced its work on voter education, health advocacy and international outreach. The sponsor asked colleagues to support the resolution; the House adopted it by voice vote.
The House adjourned for the day and announced it will reconvene on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
