Board adopts revised donation policy to remove strict box limit

The West Bend City Library Board voted to approve a revised donation policy that eliminates a fixed limit on the number of donation boxes or bags library staff will accept.
Board discussion described a recent incident in which a patron brought six boxes and was dissatisfied when staff declined to accept them because of a four-box guideline. The revised policy removes that explicit four-box limit and clarifies that staff may decline donations that are moldy, damaged or otherwise unsanitary. The Friends of the Library were identified as the usual steward for resaleable items.
A board member moved to accept the policy as revised; the motion was seconded, brought to a voice vote and carried. Board members said staff should use judgment to accept donations when feasible and route items to the Friends of the Library, recycle, or discard items that are not suitable for the collection.
One board member suggested the Friends of the Library could sell suitable donated items to raise funds for library projects or program support.
