District staff used the ELAC meeting to highlight several parent resources and upcoming engagement opportunities: free ESL classes, the CABE parent conference, a call for library volunteers, and community input sessions on proposed elementary science curricula.
ESL classes: Farai, community liaison at William Green, described three ESL class levels with dates, times and childcare availability. Level 1 meets Tuesdays/Thursdays at FDR (8:45–11:15); level 2 meets Mondays/Wednesdays at the district wellness center (3:30–6:40) and offers childcare; level 3 is offered through El Camino College with two Tuesday/Thursday options (9:00–12:10 and 6:30–9:40) and does not include district childcare. Farai said registration was available after the meeting at the district office from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and that parents can also register later through community liaisons or ParentSquare.
CABE conference and parent learning: Staff promoted CABE 2025 in Long Beach (March 26–29) as a conference for parents, teachers and school leaders focused on bilingual learners. Charisse (meeting speaker) encouraged parent participation and described examples of ideas parents brought back from past conferences (new family groups, technology workshops).
Volunteer and community opportunities: The meeting noted a need for library volunteers and asked interested parents to contact Erin Blatt Johnson. Site spotlights and board meeting dates were also announced; parents were invited to attend school spotlights and upcoming advisory meetings (AAPAC, special needs family support, DPACC, DLAC) and to bring issues to site councils.
Elementary science curriculum review: Charice (DPACC lead) invited parents to attend DPACC on Jan. 29 to review two elementary science curriculum options and provide input; a follow‑up discussion will occur Feb. 26. The meeting asked community liaisons to circulate the review materials in advance.
Ending: Staff closed by reminding parents of the next DLAC meeting (Feb. 12) and several near‑term advisory meetings; they urged parents to share resources with neighbors and to bring questions to site councils and district liaisons.
