Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife staff described early results from their Northern bobwhite (bobwhite quail) recovery effort, including habitat restoration at Letterkenny Army Depot, partner roles and initial post‑release survey findings.
Hayley Keff, quail, pheasant and dove biologist, said the bobwhite is non‑migratory and was extirpated from much of Pennsylvania by the 1990s. After five years of site preparation, staff translocated 87 birds to a 1,500‑plus acre focal area at Letterkenny in March 2024. Keff credited partners including Letterkenny Army Depot and Pheasants Forever for habitat work and management.
Keff said partners have managed more than 4,000 habitat acres across the focal area and that restoration tools have included prescribed fire, tree clearing, invasive removal, native plantings and supplemental feeding. She listed translocation sources as Fort Knox (Kentucky), Fort Barfoot (Virginia), the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and Tall Timbers Research Station (Florida).
Post‑release surveys showed encouraging signs: spring whistle counts detected multiple singing males at points across the focal area—a sign of breeding activity—and fall covey counts recorded eight coveys. Keff said covey calling is density‑dependent and that eight coveys indicates survival and reproductive activity after release. She said the program will attempt repeat translocations in March of the coming year and again in 2026 with a goal of roughly 100 birds per year, and that future work will attach radio transmitters to a subset of birds to measure survival and reproduction more precisely.
Keff also noted broader biodiversity benefits: breeding bird surveys indicated increased species richness in managed areas and improved conditions for early successional species such as American woodcock and state‑listed grassland obligates.
Ending: Staff said the program is a multi‑partner effort and urged continued habitat management, further translocations and additional monitoring to assess establishment and productivity over coming seasons.
