Council to workshop submitted ceasefire resolution after members request revisions and community input

Carlisle Borough Council heard from members about a draft ceasefire resolution concerning the Israel–Gaza conflict that residents submitted in September and agreed to continue discussion in a future workshop after staff and councilors review and revise the text.

Deputy Mayor Landis raised the topic during council reports, noting that residents presented a draft ceasefire resolution in September and that council had not yet discussed it. Landis said, in part, that he wanted to follow up because "when our residents come and bring things to us" the council should consider next steps and whether to proceed to a vote.

Council members expressed interest in further discussion but emphasized caution about wording. One councilor said they had already prepared a reformatted draft and offered to circulate a revised version to colleagues. Another councilor said they would like to speak with community members and review the submitted and revised drafts before the item is scheduled for a workshop.

A council member also cautioned that some phrasing in the draft could be "offensive to members of the Jewish community" and urged sensitivity to the history and suffering on all sides; that member recommended bringing revised language forward and noted the importance of being mindful of the broader community when considering symbolic resolutions.

Outcome: Councilors agreed to carry the item forward for additional review and to consider placing a revised draft on a future workshop agenda. No formal vote or ordinance was taken at the meeting.
