Stokes said the statute fixes MLK Day to the third Monday in January, which explains why the holiday can coincide with a presidential inauguration.

Assemblymember Anderson invoked a King quote — "No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they—ve died for" — and tied King—s fight for prison reform and economic justice to calls for justice in recent violent crimes cited on the Assembly floor. The resolution passed by voice vote; the clerk recorded adoption without a numerical roll-call in the transcript.
The measure was offered on the main calendar and taken up as a calendar resolution earlier in the session. The Assembly then proceeded to other committee calls and floor business after adopting the commemorative resolution.
