Facilities staff told the Birmingham Community Charter High District board that inspections conducted over the winter break found higher-than-expected deficiencies and that work orders have already been submitted to correct them.
“Deficiencies have already been submitted as work orders and [we are] working with vendors to correct them,” the facilities report said. Staff listed safety and fire-code updates, replacement or repositioning of roof-access items, and updates to fire extinguishers.
Renovations to student cafeteria floors and paint have been completed and ceiling tiles are scheduled for installation; asbestos abatement was finished in rooms 60 and 61 and work in the utility building is expected to be completed in February. Staff also said faculty restrooms and the restrooms in the 400 building are operational after the work.
The facilities report added that recent winds caused soccer-field lights to fall and that the district will replace the lights because they are “out of code.” Poles will be relocated outside the field boundary and a work order was submitted to secure a gate behind the 400 building that currently swings open.
Why it matters: The work addresses safety and code compliance, restores student and staff facilities, and may require vendor contracts and budgeted capital work.
Board action: The facilities update was informational; staff said work orders are in process and no board motion was recorded during the update.
Details and context: Staff noted an 86 percent “fair” rating in the facilities inspection summary and said asbestos abatement in identified rooms had been completed. The report mentioned consultation with the PSA-approved design plan that allowed removal of chain lines outside the cafeteria.
Next steps: Facilities staff will continue vendor coordination to complete remaining repairs and will report progress at future meetings.
