The City Council authorized a task order to AdvanTech Consulting Engineers for the design of a traffic signal and diagonal ("scramble") pedestrian crossing at Cathedral Canyon Drive and Canyon Shores Drive to integrate the Coachella Valley (CV) Link. The council approved the design encumbrance unanimously.
What was approved: City staff recommended a task order to AdvanTech in the amount of $49,805 with a 10% contingency, bringing the total design encumbrance to $54,790. Under an existing reimbursement agreement, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) will cover 75% of design costs; the city’s 25% share is $13,697 for the design phase.
Project purpose and scope: The intersection will support the CV Link multiuse path where it crosses Cathedral Canyon Drive north of the Ophelia Bringas bridge. The design team will start with a diagonal (scramble) crossing configuration that allows pedestrians to cross all directions, including northwest‑to‑southwest diagonal movements, when traffic is stopped. AdvanTech’s scope includes warrant analysis, plans, specifications, estimates, bidding assistance, construction support and utility coordination.
Vote and logistics: The council motion to approve the task order passed unanimously. Staff said the cost proposal is consistent with industry rates for a traffic signal design project and that Cathedral City will be the lead agency for design and construction coordination.
Next steps: City staff will execute the task order and proceed with preliminary design, coordination with CVAG and utility owners, and preparation of plans and specs for bidding and construction.
