Frederick delegation schedules vote next week on bill to add fingerprint checks for county hires

Delegate Elliot Simpson introduced HB492, a bill the county has pushed previously that would authorize a fingerprint-supported background-check option for certain Frederick County employees and volunteers.
The measure would allow county employers to use a fingerprint-supported check as an additional, less costly option intended to return results faster than the county’s current full background checks, Simpson said.
Victoria Venable, of the County Executive’s office, told the delegation the county currently uses the sheriff’s office for full background checks on positions that work with vulnerable adults, children or security-sensitive functions. Venable said the sheriff’s office is supportive of HB492 because it would allow the sheriff’s team to reduce its workload by handling fewer full checks. "This would give us the opportunity to do something kind of in the middle where we just are doing the basic fingerprint," Venable said.
Members asked for a letter of support from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Venable said she had requested that letter earlier in the week and that the sheriff’s office was preparing one. The delegation agreed to place HB492 on next week’s agenda for a vote once the sheriff’s letter is received.
No formal vote occurred at this meeting. Delegates asked staff to circulate the sheriff’s letter when available and to add HB492 to the next meeting agenda for a recorded vote.
