City outlines wildfire preparedness and state budget implications for local housing and wildfire mitigation

City Manager Dan Buckshay updated the Walnut Creek City Council on Jan. 21 about Southern California wildfires, Mutual Aid deployments and local wildfire preparedness work, and provided a brief summary of the governor’s recently released state budget and implications for housing and wildfire mitigation.

Buckshay said Contra Costa units were deployed for statewide mutual aid and praised interagency coordination; he emphasized that prevention and preparation—defensible-space maintenance, open-space fuel breaks and training—are the most effective measures against severe wildfire events. He noted an ongoing “shaded fuel break” project along the southern Walnut Creek border near Rossmoor and Lafayette to create defensible space.

On the state budget, Buckshay said the governor proposed a roughly $322 billion overall budget with a small surplus and use of significant reserves to balance the plan. He noted continued one-time state funding for housing and homeless programs and a proposed consolidation into a department of housing and homeless services; staff said one-time funding makes building ongoing supportive services difficult. He also said the state budget includes funding for wildfire mitigation and debris removal.

Council members asked about resident preparedness; staff and council emphasized household “go-bags,” pet preparedness and local town halls on wildfire readiness. Buckshay directed residents to the city website and the ReadyForWildfire.org resource for preparedness guidance.

No formal action was required; council thanked staff for the update and commented on local mutual-aid deployments and prevention work.
