Porterville City Council voted Wednesday to provide short-term financial support to local youth sports and to temporarily reduce field and lighting fees for recreational leagues.
Sponsorship and storage: Council approved a $2,500 sponsorship to Porterville Girls Fastpitch for fence banners and other immediate needs following a flood that damaged the league’s storage and equipment. Council also directed staff to evaluate storage options at Hays Field and report back with possible solutions after the league described losses in a storage unit during recent flooding.
Fees and temporary relief: After hearing from parents, coaches and young players who testified about field conditions and maintenance needs, the council directed staff to implement a one-season, temporary subsidy that halves field reservation and light-use fees for youth recreational leagues (not travel teams). The council authorized using City Council discretionary (special purpose reserve) funds to cover the difference and asked staff to return with an accounting of the estimated fiscal impact and a defined mechanism for applying the subsidy.
Council emphasized the measure is temporary and should be reviewed after the season. Council also asked Parks & Leisure to pursue volunteer and sponsorship partnerships to improve fields and to explore options to avoid long-term budget impacts.
Outcome: Sponsorship approved (council vote 5-0); council approved temporary fee relief for one season with staff to return with implementation details and cost estimates (vote 5-0).
