District says conformed drawings complete; health department review and permits remain for construction project

District construction staff told the Ashe County Schools Board on Jan. 13 that the project's conformed set of drawings — which incorporate addenda and approved alternates from the pre-bid period — has been delivered to the construction contractor, and that the district has cleared a major administrative hurdle with VPI approval.
A project representative said the final approval from the health department is still under review and the district expects that review to be routine. "We have received official approval from VPI ... We are still waiting to hear back from the health department for their final sign off," the project representative said.
The presenter also said the Local Government Commission (LGC) voted to authorize the county to issue the obligation bonds that will fund the work and that the district continues to await local building inspections and permitting. Staff estimated local building permits could be issued by the end of February, noting inspectors have been busy responding to hurricane-related work in the county.
Contract-level details remain under review; staff said items such as concrete under a deck, door hardware and other minutiae will be reconciled in a summary the district will share with board members. Staff invited board members to review the technical summary once it is complete.
No formal action on the construction contract was recorded at the meeting; the update was provided for the board's information and next steps include completion of health-department review, issuance of local permits and contractor mobilization once those approvals are in hand.
