The City Council on Jan. 16 approved a facility-use agreement with Seaside Pony Baseball and Softball for the 2025 season and waived associated field-use fees totaling $84,457.50.
The item was pulled from the consent agenda for brief public comment. Multiple residents, community volunteers and youth spoke in favor of the fee waiver, saying the fields and volunteer coaches are central to community life and youth development. Supporters noted the waiver authorizes use of Soper Field, Rubio and Casino baseball fields and emphasized that the action waives potential rental revenue rather than directly issuing cash to the league.
Public commenters asked that the city balance investments across age groups and facilities; several speakers answered that the waiver keeps youth programs running and does not preclude future investment in other recreation activities. A council member noted the waiver has been a recurring practice for decades as part of the city’s youth-support efforts.
Council moved, seconded and carried the item unanimously.
