Seaside council holds closed session on city manager recruitment; no readout anticipated

The City of Seaside City Council and the Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency met in closed session Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in Seaside City Hall Council Chambers to discuss one matter of public employment: the city manager recruitment, the city attorney said.

The closed-session item was called under Government Code section 54957, the city attorney told the meeting: “council will meet in closed session to discuss 1 matter of public employment pursuant to government code section 54957. The position in question is the city manager recruitment. For the benefit of the public, I do not anticipate a readout today.”

The closed-session reading followed a roll call that established a quorum. Council and Agency Member Miller, Council and Agency Member Birx, Council and Agency Member Garcia Arezzola, Mayor Pro Tem and Vice Chair Pacheco, and Mayor and Chair Oglesby were present. No members of the public gave comment on the closed-session item before the council recessed into closed session, the minutes record indicates.

Under California’s Brown Act, Government Code section 54957 permits public bodies to meet in closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, evaluation, or dismissal of public employees. The city attorney’s statement that a readout was not anticipated indicates the council did not plan to disclose details of its deliberations at the end of the session.

After the city attorney’s announcement, the council moved into closed session. The meeting record shows public comment was open and that no members of the public came forward for the closed-session item prior to the recess.
