Poppy Perfect, data and educational reporting coordinator, presented Sage Oak's results on the recently released 2023–24 California School Dashboard and recommended the board approve the 2023–24 School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for submission to the California Department of Education.
Poppy summarized several headline findings from the Dashboard and local analyses: "2324 was no exception. We brought in 1600 new students and that was 37% of our total enrollment," she said, adding that new students tended to enter with lower ELA and math scores and that the new-student mix affects whole-school metrics.
Why it matters: The state Dashboard colors and the SARC are used by authorizers, families and the CDE to track outcomes and interventions. The presentation highlighted strong graduation and attendance metrics and areas needing focused work, especially English learner progress.
Key findings presented
- Enrollment and incoming-student effect: Poppy said 1,600 students (about 37% of enrollment) joined Sage Oak in 2023–24; new students entered with lower CAS ELA and math scores (about a 9% difference in ELA and an 8% difference in math for new vs. returning students, according to the presenter).
- Attendance and suspensions: Sage Oak's chronic absenteeism rates were markedly low compared with the state (presenter cited Sage Oak under 1.5% and Keppel/South under 1%). Suspension rates for the Sage Oak schools were 0%.
- Graduation and college/career indicators: Sage Oak reported a 96.5% on-time graduation rate and higher college-and-career preparation percentages than the statewide average; Poppy said Sage Oak earned a blue category for graduation and a green color for the College and Career indicator at the main campus.
- English learner progress: Poppy noted English learner progress lagged the state average for qualifying testers; about 40.7% of qualifying test-takers made progress, which moved that indicator into the red for Sage Oak.
Board action
The board voted to approve the 2023–24 SARC and to submit the document to the California Department of Education to meet the Feb. 1 deadline. The motion carried unanimously among board members present.
