Trustee Alex announces resignation effective Jan. 24, cites family needs; board members praise his service

Trustee Alex announced his resignation from the Los Gatos‑Saratoga Union High School District board, effective Jan. 24, citing an “extremely difficult and ongoing family matter” that prevents him from meeting the responsibilities of the office.

Alex told the board he had hoped to balance family obligations and trustee duties but that recent months made continuation impossible. “When this situation started in August, I thought that I would be able to meet both of my family needs and the responsibilities as trustee,” he said. “But upon reflection, the last six months … I’m not able to meet the expectations I have for myself or from the community that elected me.”

The resignation drew multiple statements of appreciation from fellow trustees and district leaders. Board members praised Alex for his years of service as a teacher and trustee and for his work during the district’s recent parcel tax campaign and strategic planning process. Trustee Catherine said she had firsthand experience of his impact on students and the community, while other trustees noted his role in advocating for staff raises and the district’s 10‑year strategic plan.

Alex explicitly rejected claims that his resignation was related to personnel disputes or online petitions. “I’m in no way resigning because of anything related to superintendent Sanderson or the malicious untruthful personal attacks targeting me and my wife via the change.org petition,” he said.

Board discussion after the announcement focused on gratitude for Alex’s service and the practical next steps the board will take to fill the upcoming vacancy. No formal action to appoint a replacement was taken at the Jan. 14 meeting.

The resignation will take effect Jan. 24, and the board will address the vacancy and any required procedures at a future meeting. The district did not state a timeline for filling the seat in the meeting transcript.
