Supporters, including volunteers with the Friends of the Library, said monthly book sales help the library and that the Friends provided roughly $14,000 to the library last year. A Friends volunteer described the monthly sale schedule and said the group supports library programming and furniture purchases.
Critics said the annex price far exceeds the annual contributions and urged alternative solutions. A resident said, “We're talking about $300,000... to build an annex that donates $14,000 a year,” and asked whether the city should instead allocate funds directly to library programming or find space in existing city buildings.
City staff said staff have examined options, including enclosing a portion of the library patio to give the Friends indoor space; staff said the current library is already out of space, but that enclosing the patio is an option under consideration. Resident John Coit suggested giving the Friends space in an existing city building rather than funding a standalone annex.
An alternative idea raised by a resident was to move the annex structure and build a veterans memorial at that visible park location funded by private donations rather than city funds. Staff said the matter will be part of the prioritization results the council will use in budget planning.
