The St. Mary's County Historic Preservation Commission presented its annual report to the Board of County Commissioners on May 20 and presented the 2008 Historic Preservation Service Award to volunteer archivist Carol L. Moody.
Commissioners read the proclamation recognizing National Historic Preservation Month. The commission’s report, presented by commission members in the meeting, said priorities include implementing the county historic preservation plan, publicizing local designation and tax‑credit programs, surveying family and roadside cemeteries for the county database, examining revolving‑fund models used in other jurisdictions to rescue endangered historic properties, and continuing public education programs.
Commissioners and commission members discussed an upcoming county publication of compiled research being edited by the Maryland Historical Trust; the presenter said the book was in final editing and expected to be published by year’s end, with copies available through libraries. The commission said it meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Department of Land Use and Growth Management and invited public participation.
Commissioners thanked commission members for their work and for outreach projects that included cemetery identification and local historic surveys. Carol L. Moody accepted the service award and was recognized for nine years of volunteer archival work with historical organizations in the county.
