Superintendent Dempsey presented a suggested revision clarifying that "students who choose to participate in graduation exercises are required to wear district approved attire, including a cap and gown in the designated color," and that students may decorate caps so long as "the decorations comply with the guidelines outlined in the campus issued graduation contract."
Board members asked how the policy would treat regalia such as cords and stoles, and Dempsey said those determinations would most practically be handled at the campus level through the graduation contract. "That would be determined at the campus level... I would not recommend you put it in policy," he said, referencing difficulties encountered when the board tried to regulate decorations in policy previously.
Direct questions about outstanding senior fees prompted discussion of next steps: board members asked administration to return at the next meeting with a report on senior fee balances and the protocol used by campuses to collect fees so families have adequate time to clear balances before graduation. President Flores said that if the board takes action on policy it would be implemented immediately, and members emphasized the need for adequate lead time to avoid last-minute exclusions.
The board also requested that administration present the campus-level graduation contract (the document campuses use to set specific attire and cap-decoration rules) at the next meeting.
