Board approves out-of-state travel for selected Native American students to youth summit in Washington, D.C.

Jonathan Faust, special programs director at the Columbia Gorge ESD, and Azeri Ozias, the ESD's Native American liaison for the Title VI Indian Education Program, requested board approval for out-of-state travel so selected Native American youth from North Wasco could attend the American Indian and Alaska Native Youth Summit run by the Close-Up Foundation in Washington, D.C., April 27–May 2, 2025.
Faust said the summit will provide civic-engagement training, leadership development and opportunities for students to develop action initiatives addressing community challenges. He said 12 students across the ESD consortium will be selected through an essay process and that tuition, transportation, lodging, meals and instructional support are included in the program cost. Faust stated the trip is funded through ESD grants.
Director Nelson moved to approve the out-of-district request; Director Lopez seconded. The board approved the trip by voice vote; all present said "aye." Faust said winners selected from North Wasco would be announced after approval and that the students are expected to return and present to the board after the trip.
