Survey shows strong preference for Lamar CISD calendar Option 1; trustees to set calendars next month

Lamar CISD staff briefed the Board of Trustees Jan. 23 on two proposed calendar options for each of the 2025–26 and 2026–27 school years and summarized community survey results that will inform a board action next month.
Survey results and methodology: the district delivered 47,473 unique survey invitations (excluding bounce backs) and received 12,011 completed responses between Nov. 15 and Dec. 18; 95 percent of respondents took the survey in English and 5 percent in Spanish. The district presented two options per year: Option 1 closely mirrors the current year’s calendar and Option 2 includes tweaks requested by some respondents (later start dates, alignment with neighboring Katy ISD or corporate calendars). Staff reported 79 percent of respondents preferred Option 1 for 2025–26 and 80 percent preferred Option 1 for 2026–27.
Reasons reported: supporters of Option 1 cited clustered breaks (a full week for Thanksgiving and an extended fall break) and fewer “random days off,” while supporters of Option 2 preferred a later school start and alignment with work calendars. Staff emphasized trustees are making a decision that will affect the district for two years and noted the district recently moved to approving calendars two years at a time to give families longer lead time.
Next steps: staff will present the calendar options as a board action at the next meeting for trustees to approve and then publish the approved calendar. No formal calendar vote occurred on Jan. 23.
