Jennings County School Corporation staff presented a proposed physical-education waiver that would allow students to earn one credit of required PE by completing a full season of designated activities.
Presenters identified the waiver as aligned with the Indiana Department of Education’s long-standing flexibility to grant PE credit for participation in IHSA-sanctioned athletics and certain co-curricular activities. The proposal would allow students to receive PE credit for participation in IHSA-sanctioned sports, marching band, show choir and the swing choir program provided students start at the first practice and finish through the last contest, with the coach or sponsor signing to confirm completion. Under the proposal the credit would be recorded as pass/fail and would not affect a student’s GPA.
The presenters said the waiver aims to provide schedule flexibility for upperclassmen to pursue work-based learning and hands-on opportunities, noting that the new Indiana high school diploma reduced required PE credits and emphasized personalization. The board received the proposal as an informational item and staff said a formal vote will be taken at the board’s first February meeting.
