The Los Angeles City Council on April 27 recognized a private–nonprofit partnership that collects business clothing for people reentering the job market. Councilmembers commended Nissan North America and Close the Deal for the second annual “Retire Your Attire” campaign and invited the groups’ representatives to the dais for a resolution of appreciation.
Councilmember (name provided by the chair) introduced representatives from Nissan North America and Close the Deal. Nissan’s representative said last year’s effort collected about 100,000 garments across Los Angeles, Sacramento and Washington, D.C., and the program has expanded nationwide.
The resolution commended the partnership and urged City employees to donate usable business apparel — suits, shirts, blouses, slacks, ties and accessories — to help people prepare for employment following training or reentry programs. Councilmembers presented the resolution and invited comments from the organizations’ representatives.
Terry Hernandez, speaking for Nissan, said the company was proud of the campaign’s results and thanked the council for endorsing the city-level effort.
No vote was required beyond adoption of the ceremonial commendation resolution on the council floor.
