House approves bill to require distinct labeling of cell-cultured protein products

Pierre — The South Dakota House gave final passage to House Bill 1022 on Thursday, a measure that would prohibit labeling that could mislead consumers about cell-cultured protein products.
Representative Knowles, who introduced the bill, described it as "very simple" and said it ensures consumers can tell the difference "when they go into a store, what they are buying." Knowles noted the measure was brought by the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and urged members to support it as a proactive step; Representative Peterson thanked the Department and agricultural groups for bringing the bill forward.
Supporters said the measure protects traditional producers and removes consumer confusion; Representative Peterson said, "It's good for the consumers. They know what they're buying," and added it was "good for the producers too." The sponsor noted that cell-cultured protein products were not yet widely available and that the bill is intended as a preemptive clarity measure.
The clerk reported the roll call on final passage as 69 ayes; the House declared the bill passed.
