Council Rock releases draft 2026–27 calendar; district highlights flexible instructional days

District administrators distributed a draft district calendar for 2026–27 at Wednesday’s Education Committee and described scheduling choices intended to preserve family predictability while using new options in state law.

Why it matters: Act 56 gives districts flexibility to meet state requirements either through 180 instructional days or by meeting minimum instructional-hour thresholds. Council Rock’s draft aims to maintain family certainty about graduation and holidays while using available tools to manage weather-related closures.

Draft highlights and rationale: the proposal includes a start date of Monday, Aug. 31, for kindergarten, grades 2–6 and grades 7 and 9, with all students reporting on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Labor Day falls on Sept. 7 in 2026 and the draft preserves the Labor Day holiday block; the calendar retains a five-day spring break and adds Eid and Diwali observances.

Flexible instructional days: administrators noted the district has an allotment of five flexible instructional days that allow a school closure to be handled via asynchronous virtual learning while still counting toward the annual hours requirement. District staff said they have already advised the community that future winter closures may use a flexible instructional day and that the district will apply to the state for the flexible-day authorization as required.

Next steps: the calendar remains draft and several dates (for example, the May election and graduation dates) were marked tentative. Staff said they intend to refine the calendar and present a final version for board consideration once details — including the graduation date, typically approved at the April board meeting — are confirmed.
