Seattle City Council approves fourth-quarter 2024 employment ordinance

The Seattle City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 21 to approve the fourth-quarter 2024 employment ordinance, which authorizes a set of personnel actions including civil-service exemptions, title changes and pay adjustments.
Council President Sarah Nelson, reporting as chair of the Governance, Accountability and Economic Development Committee, said the ordinance would authorize the director of the city’s human-resources department to exempt four positions from civil service, return 11 positions to civil service, revise two job titles, establish 13 job titles with corresponding pay rates, and adjust rates of pay for two existing titles. Nelson said the committee first discussed the ordinance on Dec. 12 and reviewed it again on Jan. 9, when it was voted out of committee unanimously.
The council adopted the consent calendar earlier in the meeting by unanimous roll call. The consent calendar included the minutes of the Jan. 14, 2025 meeting and Council Bill 12935, described as the Payment of Bills. The employment ordinance (Council Bill 12925) was read into the record and then passed by roll call vote, 8-0.
