House Committee on Higher Education adopts rules, schedules informational hearings

At a Jan. 21 organizational meeting, the House Committee on Higher Education and Workforce Development adopted its committee rules by roll call and set an informational meeting on the higher education system for the coming Thursday, with staff materials posted to OLIS.
Representative Hudson, chair of the House Committee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, called the committee to order at 9 a.m. on Jan. 21 and led introductions before the panel adopted its committee rules.
The committee adopted the rules in a roll-call motion after Rep. Harvick moved “to adopt the committee rules dated January 21, 2025.” The roll call recorded aye votes from Representative Peter McDonald; Representative Leslie Munoz; Representative Boomer Wright; Representative Juncker; Vice Chair Figueroa; Vice Chair Harvick; and Chair Hudson. The motion passed.
Members used the brief organizational meeting to introduce themselves and describe their interest areas in higher education and workforce development. Representatives noted local college campuses in their districts and experience in K-12 and higher education; several members emphasized interest in teacher preparation, transfer pathways and workforce options that do not require a four-year degree.
Chair Hudson thanked the committee’s LPRO analyst, Ellen O’Brien, saying, “I would like to take a moment to, thank our LPRO analyst, Ellen O'Brien, and, thank them for the support that they are giving to our committee.”
The committee announced an informational meeting scheduled for Thursday to provide an overview of the higher education system; the agenda and materials were posted to OLIS, the Legislature’s online information system. No bills or substantive policy measures were considered at this organizational session.
The committee adjourned after completing introductions and formally adopting the rules, preparing to begin informational hearings at its next meeting.
