Superintendent: PowerSchool nationwide breach affected district data; no Social Security numbers stored locally

The superintendent notified the RSU 52 board that PowerSchool — the district's student information system provider — reported a nationwide data breach and that PowerSchool is contacting affected individuals and offering two years of credit monitoring.
The superintendent told the board: "I think the best news is is that as a district, we do not store Social Security numbers in PowerSchool." She said PowerSchool has indicated it will notify the individuals whose data were accessed and provide two years of credit monitoring. The superintendent also said the breach included records going back several years and affected some staff members who no longer work for the district.
The superintendent said she planned to send an additional notice to families summarizing the information the district has and reminding families to expect direct contact from PowerSchool. She emphasized that the breach was at PowerSchool's systems nationally and was not the result of a district systems lapse.
