Staff praised crews for repeated treatments of icy roads and said salt and cinders sometimes cannot clear ice under freezing conditions. The department reported several trucks undergoing preventive maintenance and said shop personnel and off-duty crews have been working to restore equipment readiness.
Public-works officials described the GPS system implemented on county trucks as a useful tool in responding to citizen complaints; the GPS allows managers to show how many times a truck visited a road. The department said the GPS data has helped resolve disputes over whether crews visited particular roads and provided operational proof when residents questioned service frequency.
The department said it was awarded “1.5” for CCNG (transcript phrasing). The advertisement for the bidding will appear in the newspaper on Jan. 28 with a bid opening scheduled for Feb. 20, according to staff; the transcript did not specify units tied to the “1.5” figure.
Staff also described an AI-based road-data system under consideration that many counties are adopting. The system would create standardized drive-by inventories of hard-surface roads, capture photos and data on pavement condition and signage, and produce cost forecasting for repaving. Staff said the tool could improve consistency across county and state systems and assist budgeting and asset management.
Public-works staff urged continued preparation for winter operations and said the department will keep commissioners informed about the CCNG project and further information on the road-data system.
