Library says PERC moved to main floor, 1,000 items reorganized and volunteers reallocated

Bryce (staff member) told the commission that the Parent Education Resource Collection, known as PERC, opened in a new location at the back of the storytelling wing in November and that staff moved roughly 1,000 items after sorting a larger inventory.
"The collection moved up," Bryce said, describing the move from lower-level storage to a visible, main-floor location and the work to sort roughly 8,000 items down to about 1,000 materials that were integrated into the library collection.
Staff described changes to presentation and handling designed to protect materials and improve access: new packaging options (clear bags, rigid containers) and shelving by category rather than Dewey numbers so patrons can more easily find educational kits and manipulatives. The PERC collection is organized in about 20 topical categories, staff said.
Volunteers who previously supported PERC operations were redeployed to floor-level collection-access roles to help patrons and parents in person; staff said this has improved customer interaction and durability of the materials. Bryce also said the library will continue to buy and catalog new items that will permanently belong to the library (distinct from items that originated with the former PERC nonprofit).
Bryce said the original PERC donor organization retains a contractual right to reclaim certain items after a multi-year period, but the transcript did not specify the exact number of years. Staff said they will catalog newly purchased items so the library can replace pieces and maintain circulation going forward.
