Monona partners with Lions Club to host plastic‑film drop‑off for Trex bench contest

Alder Bernstein said the Lions Club agreed to assemble drop‑off boxes and collect plastic film—such as retail bags and other film packaging—that is not accepted in curbside recycling. The group has placed three pilot drop‑off boxes (one at ReStore and one at Delta Beer Lab, and a third site yet to be finalized) and will transport collected material weekly to a Trex collection point.
Bernstein said Trex converts the collected film into composite benches when communities gather roughly 1,000 pounds of material. The committee discussed public outreach, possible city web pages, a short newsletter blurb, and Facebook posts to raise awareness. Thor and other staff members explained how to prepare a simple webpage or newsletter text: volunteers or partners can draft copy and images in Word and email it to staff for posting.
Committee members said the Lions Club will handle weekly pickup and that the project is in a “soft opening” stage before a larger publicity push and a planned grand opening once the third drop‑off location is confirmed.
No formal vote was taken. Committee members agreed to coordinate publicity once staff had a draft web page and to circulate items to boost on social media.
