The Board of County Commissioners voted Aug. 26 to authorize Commissioner President Jack Russell to sign the Federal Equitable Sharing Annual Certification Report, an affidavit that continues the sheriff’s office participation in the federal equitable-sharing program for forfeited assets.
Sheriff Cameron appeared before the board and described the program as money forfeited through the county's HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) unit that is used for training, equipment and narcotics investigation and enforcement. Cameron asked that the document be signed so the county can continue to use shared federal asset funds for law-enforcement purposes; commissioners approved the request unanimously.
Cameron and commissioners agreed not to detail equipment purchases publicly to avoid tipping off criminal targets. Commissioner remarks included praise for the sheriff’s narcotics enforcement results.
