County OKs $250,000 CDBG amendment to repair 11 units in Colony Square and New Phoenix

The Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 26 authorized a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) amendment that allocates a $250,000 grant award for rehabilitation work on 11 housing units in the Colony Square/New Phoenix area, to be administered through the St. Mary's County Housing Authority.
Department of Economic and Community Development staff (Mr. Schaller) and a Housing Authority representative (Mr. Nicholson) said the funds will cover renovation work on 11 townhomes — seven units needing interior renovation and three that require significant work because of sinking slabs and a high water table — located near Colony Square and 46831 Flower Drive. Schaller said the application was competitive and that the award completes the financing for the project.
Schaller and commissioners also explained the state combined this award with an earlier 2007 grant so the paperwork consolidated $490,000 in total funding for rehabilitation activity across the two rounds. Commissioners approved the amendment and authorized Commissioner President Jack Russell to sign the grant amendment and subrecipient agreement allowing the Housing Authority to receive pass-through funds.
The motion carried with no recorded opposition.
