St. Mary's County commissioners held a public hearing Sept. 1 on the draft 2016–2025 comprehensive solid waste management and recycling plan.
George Erickson, the county presenter, said the plan update is required to cover a 10‑year planning period and must be adopted and forwarded to the state by Sept. 30, 2015. Erickson told the board the draft had been developed with input from Land Use and Growth Management, the Commission on the Environment, the U.S. Navy, the Board of Education, the town of Leonardtown, customer surveys at convenience centers and the health department.
No speakers signed up on the hearing sign‑in sheet. Erickson and the chair noted that the commissioners will accept written public comments on the plan for an additional 10 days; the transcript includes the mailing address for written submissions (PO Box 653, Leonardtown, MD 20650) and an email contact for the commissioners' office.
Erickson described the hearing as a follow-up to memorandums and a longer presentation given July 1; the purpose, he said, was to afford the public another opportunity to comment on the draft before the county forwards the plan to the state.
