Residents press for traffic fixes in southern St. Mary’s County, including lights and congestion relief

Multiple residents told the St. Mary’s County commissioners on Sept. 1 that traffic and congestion in southern parts of the county create safety risks and hinder emergency response.
Christian Aldarucci asked the commissioners to push the highway department for traffic lights at Lenard’s Grant Road and Hollywood Road and at the hospital entrance, saying studies were under way but that he would continue pushing the issue until lights are installed. “We need 1 there and we need 1 in front of the hospital,” Aldarucci said, citing speeding and bus-related safety concerns.
Joseph Oliver suggested stronger speed enforcement, including the possibility of speed cameras, to slow through traffic near Route 5 crossings and improve safety at the hospital entrance and other tight intersections.
Steve Woodburn suggested evaluating a roundabout at Abel’s Wharf boat ramp to ease weekend congestion at a busy boat-launch area, where he said delays can block both launching and retrieval.
Speakers said they had seen highway crews conducting studies and asked the county to press for timely solutions. Commissioners or county highway staff did not provide a substantive response at the public forum; the county indicated that directors would receive the forum comments and responses would follow through staff channels.
