St. Mary's County commissioners on Sept. 1 approved county membership in the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition for fiscal year 2016 and authorized a $1,000 budget amendment drawn from the county emergency reserve to pay membership fees.
Deputy finance director Patty Stigman presented the request and said the membership provides advocacy and legislative coordination during the Maryland General Assembly session. Commissioners discussed perceived pros and cons, with at least one commissioner noting initial skepticism about the coalition's earlier positions but expressing support for county representation and for gaining a collective voice in Annapolis. One commissioner offered to serve as a county representative to the coalition.
The board voted to approve membership and the budget amendment by voice vote.
